任天堂FC以”红白机”的名字在国内为人相识，由任天堂与1983年首发在日本发售，其虽后再北美发售的美版(NES)也拯救了消沉的北美游戏市场。单主机就卖出了6200万份，它也第一次开创了包含审核的第三方游戏机制。红白机虽不能以官方的名义出现在中国，但由小霸王代表的一众学习机均使用fc框架，由着学习的名义，魂斗罗，坦克大战等成为了众多国人的记忆。

彼时还是纸牌公司的任天堂在北美家用Pong的成功下于日本推出了TV-GAME系列家用主机，这是一系列扩展的家用Pong游戏，也让任天堂在电子游戏界赚了第一桶金。
在其前一年的街机Radar Scope大大失败后，任天堂在其硬件基础上开发了未来闻名世界的大金刚，这也是马里奥这一角色的首次登场。据说FC的最早开发动机就是来源于制造一个可以在家里运行大金刚的游戏主机(当时还没有家用主机可以做到这点)
当年，FC以"GAMECOM"的代号在任天堂开始开发。据说大金刚的集成电路芯片成为了它的开发基础，在对竞争者的研究后，任天堂以6502处理器加上专用显示芯片让FC成为了机能的佼佼者，任天堂还在开发早期决定将其自家手持廉价游戏机GAME&WATCH的十字键挪用。
发售的前两个月，FC就在日本卖出了50万台，并且让大金刚作为它的主要首发游戏。虽然其初期发出的机器有不少的芯片问题，但它仍仍相比竞争者世嘉SG1000大获成功。与此同时开始的是与雅达利的谈判，希望在雅达利名下于美国发售该主机，而这个尝试也随着北美电子游戏大崩溃而破产了。
83年在北美发售的VS System街机让任天堂在北美打下了一定市场基础。85年，外形改制且卡带不兼容的美版FC-NES开发完成。任天堂在北美版和日版都坚持的原则是将宣发和产品设计往玩具倾斜。这从NES光枪，ROB机器人等等的外设就可见一斑。
1986年无疑是FC游戏最高产的一年。超级马里奥，塞尔达传说，和银河战士等诸多游戏正式发售，它们也会在未来成为一个个任天堂的代名词。塞尔达传说同样先驱的是游戏存档机制。
小霸王公司在中山成立，专攻FC山寨机。其在1991年还在中央电视台投放广告推广它的游戏机。小霸王真正的辉煌到1993年在来临，那年小霸王发售了自家第一台"学习机"，以学习的名号，电子游戏第一次得到机会走进千家万户。
